My coworkers and I were busy a couple of weeks ago volunteering at the Day of Caring, sponsored by United Way. In case you have not heard of the Day of Caring, let me give you a little background. In 1992 a branch of United Way sponsored a day they coined "The Day of Caring" which had a three-fold purpose:
- promote the spirit and value of volunteerism
- increase the awareness of local human service agencies and schools
- demonstrate what people working together for the community's good can accomplish
I love the third purpose, especially because it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:
Our team was assigned to work on a house owned by an elderly elementary school cafeteria worker from Provo. We spent many hours toiling away painting, pulling weeds, trees, raking, you name it! I hope that, at least in a small way, we made her life that much better and more beautiful through our efforts."Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
Margaret Mead
